Cost self-hosting realistically
Runtime responsibility extends beyond server cost. A team must assess versions, patch dependencies, configure models and providers, rotate secrets, protect data and investigate failure. Agents with tool access need stronger isolation than a chat-only service.
Self-operation fits when an experienced platform team exists, infrastructure or data requirements are specific and the organization wants to own the lifecycle long term.
Define managed service precisely
“Managed” should name concrete services: isolated environment, deployment, updates, backup, monitoring, incident path and support windows. Boundaries matter equally. Who approves new tools? Who owns domain prompts and knowledge? Which changes become separate projects?
A managed provider can own technical operation. The company remains accountable for business decisions and permitted data use.
Grant rights by tool, not by agent
General agents may connect many channels and actions. Do not give them one broad corporate role. Every tool receives separate credentials, tenant boundary, allowed operations and preferably short-lived access. Write or external actions require further approval.
Derive product choice from the process
The OpenClaw documentation covers gateway, channels, tools, skills and automation. Hermes provides an agent system with tools, memory and learning mechanisms. Fit depends on channel needs, toolset, model provider, retention behavior and operations.
Sometimes a deterministic workflow is the better answer. A general agent is justified when variable tasks and tools outweigh its additional operating and control cost.
“Managed or self-hosted” is therefore not merely a privacy question. It determines which team can own isolation, permissions, updates and incidents over time.
